This way the robots can share the information they have gathered or the data collected, with each other and all the other robots can use this information for improving their own performance. The project is undertaken by the RoboEarth Group, which aims at enabling robots to "autonomously carry out useful tasks that were not explicitly planned for at the design time."

An innovative project

The project has received funding from the Cognitive Systems and Robotics Initiative of the European Commission. The project aims at making robots smarter with the help of the information from the net, so as to enable them to do things which they were not capable of doing earlier. The robots gather a lot of information and data, while performing a given task. With the help of the new system, it will upload that data on the net which will be used by other robots while performing the same task. The process will enable the robots, to use the network for enhancing their collaboration and learning.

Robots will be able to share all kind of information

The robots gather all kinds of data during the performance of their duties. This data could include images and models of objects to enable object recognition, maps and the models of the world by robots, which aid in navigation, making strategies for doing jobs which require deftness and all kinds of other information that contributes to the artificial intelligence. This increased intelligence can allow robots to perform in more open environs like schools and hospitals, instead of places like manufacturing plants where we see most of the robots in use. The team behind this project includes researchers from the Eindhoven University of Technology, University of Zaragoza, Philips and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich.
